Types of U.S. tax IDs:
→ SSN (Social Security Number): Format XXX-XX-XXXX — if you've worked legally in the U.S.
→ ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number): Format 9XX-XX-XXXX — for people who need to file U.S. taxes but aren't eligible for an SSN

File Form W-7 with the IRS. It typically takes 4–6 weeks. You'll need to include your original passport (or certified copies) with your application. Note: an ITIN is for tax purposes only — it doesn't authorize you to work in the U.S. or give you any immigration status. Not always. If you're claiming treaty benefits on certain types of investment income (dividends and interest from actively traded stocks, mutual fund dividends, etc.), you don't need a U.S. TIN as long as you provide your foreign tax identification number on Line 6a. But for other situations, you may need an ITIN. Check the specific treaty requirements.
