🟩 Single or Married filing separately
Choose this if you're not married, or if you're married but plan to file your own separate tax return.

🟦 Married filing jointly or Qualifying surviving spouse
Choose this if you're married and will file one tax return together with your spouse.
→ Withholds less tax — slightly bigger paychecks

🟧 Head of household
Choose this if you're not married, you pay most of the household bills, and you support a child or other family member who lives with you.
→ Withholds less than "Single" — but you must qualify

✅ Not sure? Pick "Single" — it's the safest default. You can update this anytime if your situation changes.

This applies if your spouse passed away within the last two years and you have a dependent child living with you. It lets you use the same tax rates as married couples filing jointly. Usually a child who lives with you more than half the year — but it can also be a parent you financially support (even if they don't live with you). For full details, see IRS Publication 501.
