Before You Start

📄 Download the official IRS Form W-4 (PDF) — open it in your browser or save it before you begin.

Before you fill anything in, take a deep breath — here's what you should know.

✏️ Use black ink or type it on your computer.
Write clearly — payroll systems can't read messy handwriting.

📄 Print on regular white paper, one side only.
This form stays with your employer — it doesn't go to the IRS.

🚫 Made a mistake? Just start fresh.
Don't cross things out or use correction fluid. It's faster to print a new copy than risk payroll errors.

💡 What this form actually does
It doesn't change your taxes — it only changes how much tax your employer takes from each paycheck.
→ More withheld = smaller paychecks now, but you might get money back at tax time
→ Less withheld = bigger paychecks now, you might owe at tax time

This form tells payroll when to collect your tax — not how much you owe overall.

📅 When to fill out a new W-4:
→ Starting a new job
→ Getting married or divorced
→ Having a baby or gaining dependents
→ Taking a second job (or your spouse does)
→ Big change in income, deductions, or side income

💭 Good news: You can update your W-4 anytime — there's no limit.

📥 Give the completed form to your employer, not the IRS.
Hand it to HR or payroll. You don't mail or upload it anywhere.

Relax — you can always update it later.
This isn't permanent. If your situation changes, submit a new one anytime.
